Introduction
Underground utility detection is the process of locating, identifying, and mapping buried infrastructure before construction, excavation, or drilling activity takes place. In Saudi Arabia's fast-moving construction sector, where new developments are frequently built over decades of layered municipal infrastructure, the risk of encountering unrecorded or inaccurately documented utilities is significant. A dedicated utility detection survey removes that uncertainty before the first excavator arrives on site.
Why Utility Detection Matters
Utility strikes are among the most preventable causes of construction delay, cost overrun, and on-site injury. Striking a high-voltage cable can halt a project for days while repairs and safety investigations are completed. Damaging a water main can flood an excavation and surrounding properties. Cutting a fiber optic trunk line can disrupt regional telecommunications. Every one of these incidents is avoidable with an accurate pre-construction utility survey.
Beyond risk avoidance, utility detection data feeds directly into project planning โ informing trench routing, foundation design, and construction sequencing decisions that affect overall project cost and schedule.
Types of Utilities We Detect
- Water Pipelines โ potable and non-potable distribution mains and service connections
- Electrical Cables โ high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) power distribution lines
- Telecommunication Cables โ copper and fiber optic communication networks
- Sewer Lines โ gravity and pressurized sewage collection systems
- Storm Water โ surface drainage and stormwater collection infrastructure
- Gas Pipelines โ distribution and transmission gas lines
- Fiber Optic Networks โ dedicated data and communication ducting
- Unknown / Unrecorded Utilities โ legacy infrastructure absent from current records
Detection Methods Used
No single technology reliably detects every utility type in every soil condition, which is why our surveys combine multiple detection methods:
- Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) โ detects metallic and non-metallic utilities, voids, and subsurface anomalies
- Electromagnetic (EM) Locator โ traces live and passively-induced signals on conductive utilities
- Radio Detection โ actively signals and traces specific cables and metallic pipes
- GPS Survey โ provides centimeter-accurate spatial referencing for all detected features
- GIS Mapping โ compiles survey results into layered, asset-management-ready datasets
Our Survey Process
Surveys begin with a desktop study of any available utility records, followed by a site walkover and systematic grid-based detection using the appropriate combination of methods above. All detected features are logged with GPS coordinates and depth, then compiled into the agreed deliverable format.
Deliverables
- Utility maps marked on site plans or aerial imagery
- Scaled CAD drawings showing utility type, route, and depth
- GIS-format datasets for asset management integration
- Written survey report with methodology and confidence levels per utility
